The short answer to whether Thailand is unsafe to move to is a firm no. But, there are some things you will need to consider before picking up and moving to Hua Hin or elsewhere in Thailand on a whim.

However, first let’s start with the good things about living in Hua Hin as a foreigner.

1. Many Expats Live in Hua Hin

There is a substantial expat population in Hua Hin, making the locals accepting of different people from different cultures. It will not be hard for you to find community among other expats because there is even a chess club in the city specifically for expats.

Many expats come from all over the world, with English being spoken collectively among them. Despite many expats being from countries that don’t have English as their native language, most expats use English as their chosen language of common communication.

2. Great Amenities

Hua Hin has really grown as a tourist destination, and as a result, it offers several places to go. Locals can enjoy golf courses, night markets, seafood restaurants, beaches, and even malls. The area’s increase in tourism has made all these locations easier to access and safer for expats.

Yet, Hua Hin still boasts an identity of being more of a Thai town than an expat town which many expats enjoy because they feel they are getting a more authentic experience.

3. Low Crime Rate

Compared to some of the bigger cities in Thailand, the crime rate in Hua Hin is actually remarkably low. Many expats who have lived in the area for several years have stated that crime has not affected them and that they have felt safe.

4. Easily-Accessible Hospitals

There are three major hospitals in Hua Hin. There is Hua Hin Hospital, which is a government-run hospital. Then there’s two private hospitals, Bangkok Hospital and San Paulo Hospital.

There’s a direct bus service that runs to the Hua Hin hospital, so that you can get there quickly without the need for a car. Additionally, much of the staff of the Hua Hin hospital speaks excellent English.

Now that you know what is great about Hua Hin, here are a few things that you should be aware of before making your move.

5. Police Checkpoints

From time to time the police will have checkpoints on the major roads. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, as they just typically check driving licenses and that’s it.

Hua Hin is the location of one of the royal family’s holiday palaces – so security is likely to be enhanced when the royals are in town.

6. Excessive Traffic

Hua Hin is a popular town to visit, especially on weekends and during holidays, which can make the traffic in the city dense. This traffic can also make it dangerous for any expats who want to drive in the city or rent scooters. Driving in any city can be dangerous, so while this is not necessarily a deal breaker, it is something that is important to keep in mind.

Hua Hin may not be the place for everyone, but hundreds of expats absolutely love calling the city home. If you want to live in a vibrant part of Thailand but want to be somewhere a bit calmer than Bangkok, then Hua Hin is a great option for you.

While safety is something you should strongly consider before moving anywhere, there is nothing about Hua Hin that makes it especially unsafe compared to the rest of Thailand. Nowhere is perfect, but Hua Hin offers some incredible amenities and safety features that make it an amazing place that you should definitely think about if you are considering a move to Thailand.
